Don't Go Breaking Your Heart!

Published about 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hello Arrow Family,

Coach Kayla here to drop some Friday Brain Gainz!!!
So, February is typically highlighted as the month of LOVE and we are usually scrambling to touch the hearts of the ones we love. Sending out chocolates, buying flowers, and taking the time to create kind gestures for others.

If you are currently thinking “Oh shit, I forgot Monday is Valentine’s Day”
YOU ARE WELCOME!!!

So, as important as it is to touch the hearts of others, it's just as important to take a look at our own heart. The heart is the hardest working muscle in your body. It's on at all times, working tirelessly to keep us alive. So maybe it deserves a little attention.
This newsletter is going to give you some insight into HEART HEALTH!

First, How bad is it? What do the stats look like when it comes to combating heart disease? Sorry to get all grim on you but…

  • Heart disease is the leading killer in the United States and affects an estimated 14 million adults. Heart disease is responsible for more deaths in the U.S. than the 2nd through 7th leading causes of death combined.
  • One person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.
  • About 659,000 people in the United States die from heart disease each year—that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.

So what is heart disease exactly? What is going on in the body?

There are 4 common types of heart disease but we are going to focus on the one that leads the pack in terms of deaths, Coronary Heart Disease (CAD).

This starts to impact the heart when cholesterol, calcium, and other fat accumulates in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This combination hardens forming plaque that blocks blood flow to the heart. If enough plaque builds up it starves the heart muscle of oxygen and it can no longer perform its job of you know… keeping you alive!!!

Furthermore, when a piece of plaque breaks off or ruptures a blood clot forms in response to the injury. The clot blocks the flow of blood through the artery causing a heart attack.

Shit is scary right? Is there anything we can do or are we all doomed? That was intense, but I wouldn't leave you without some good news.

According to the CDC an estimated 80% of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, are preventable.

You know what that means? You can take action and make an impact on your heart health. It is not one big ACTION that creates the turning point towards a healthy heart.

It is the cumulative actions we take everyday that add up. The truth is working on your heart health sounds a lot like what we are constantly preaching at Arrow. Putting your health FIRST and focusing on the daily healthy habits that you can create in your life.

Below are the top 5 factors that play a role in heart health. It's important to note that these factors are all interrelated and one impacts the others in some way.

Take some time and look these over and ask yourself are you extending the same amount of love and care to your own heart as you do to others around you.

Coach Bassma here again! Have you ever heard the saying, “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” That’s what my husband would tell me (and still does) when I would feel overwhelmed by the huge thing I was trying to tackle. Whether it was a weight goal on the bar, or nursing school, he would remind me to just look at what’s in front of me and do the simple stuff and everything else would follow. A lot of us get overwhelmed at the thought of starting a health and fitness journey. We...

Your pelvic floor is located in your pelvis and...
